Dr. Alberts of the Cleveland Clinic to speak on "Pedaling for Parkinson's"
Community Wellness Partners and the Presbyterian Homes Foundation invite the community to the next William and Rita Abraham Speaker Series event on Tuesday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the Emmaus Room at the Presbyterian Home for Central New York. This free event will feature Dr. Jay Alberts, a neuroscientist and researcher with the Cleveland Clinic, and founder of the exercise program “Pedaling for Parkinson’s.”
The William and Rita Abraham Speaker Series provides the local community with education and insight on Parkinson’s disease with first-hand resources. The Abraham family – consisting of William (Bill) Abraham and his children, Wade and Marie Abraham, Jennifer and Alan Rust, and Andrea Sandock – created the William and Rita Abraham Speakers Series out of love for their wife and mother, Rita.
Dr. Alberts and The Davis Phinney Foundation have made significant advancements to prove the importance of exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Alberts is focused on understanding the effects of neurological disease or injury on motor and cognitive function and developing disease-specific interventions to improve motor and cognitive performance. He has worked extensively with individuals with Parkinson’s disease and had great success with his “Pedaling for Parkinson’s” program. This program is a form of “forced exercise” on a bicycle and has shown improvement in Parkinson’s related symptoms by as much as 35% for those participating 3 days a week for over 8 weeks. “Exercise needs to move from a recommendation to a prescription for people with Parkinson’s,” Alberts said.
Presbyterian Homes Foundation is currently seeking funding for this innovative class, as well as growth and expansion of their Wellness Center, to accommodate the imminent need. “We are so excited to make our dream become a reality by offering this cutting edge program, “Pedaling for Parkinson’s”, on our campus.” says Bridget Reilly, Director of Donor Engagement at Community Wellness Partners. In her comments, Reilly said, “To date, we have raised $105,000 towards our goal of $128,080. With only $23,080 left to raise, we could use your help.”
